Three Superfoods To Add To Your Menu

By Emily Josephine

Superfoods are whole foods that are extremely dense in not only vitamins and minerals, but also the anti-disease and anti-aging phytonutrients. But to get them in your diet, you don't necessarily need to spend a bunch of money every month on exotic fruit. Many such foods are common to all grocery stores, and perhaps even to your dinner plate. Following are just three such foods.

Spinach. This delicious green is high in vitamin C, which regenerates the body's vitamin E supplies and reduces cancer risk; and calcium, which promotes strong bones and supports the proper functioning of nerves.

It is high in vitamin B2, which not only helps to maintain the supplies of the other B vitamins in the body but also aids in the production of energy in the cells; magnesium, essential for building and strengthening bones and helping the blood to circulate smoothly; and folate, which aids in the production of red blood cells and allows nerves to operate at normal levels.

Swiss chard. This superfood green, like all dark leafy greens, is a great source of vitamin K, which allows for the normal clotting of the blood and normal functioning of the nerves.

It is additionally high in vitamin A, vital for healthy eye function; potassium, which helps lower the risk of high blood pressure and aids in proper functioning of nerves and muscles; vitamin E, famous for its protectiveness of the skin against ultraviolet rays; and vitamin C and iron.

Crimini mushrooms. These mini-powerhouses of nutrition are an excellent source of copper, essential for the health of bone and connective tissues and utilization of iron; and selenium, which enables thyroid hormone production and helps to reduce the risk of inflammation of the joints.

Tryptophan regulates appetites, improves mood and promotes better sleep; and vitamin B3 stabilizes blood sugar and helps to lower LDL blood cholesterol levels.

Superfoods must be an important part of your diet if you want optimum health. Consume three to four servings of such foods every day, and watch your health and energy rise to new levels!
